80 Days in America

Washington DC: Visting Elma & Rick

Yesterday one of the girls said that it was a little hard to leave the Netherlands when she came to America, but that it’ll be a lot harder to leave the America again. Today in the bus I was thinking about what she said and I’m sure she’s right. Leaving the Netherlands is actually not that hard, because you know you will return some time. But when you leave the US, you have no idea when you come back here. Fortunately my journey hast just begun and I can stay here for a couple of months, but today I already understood what she meant. More Dutchies in Boston

Today was another great holiday. I went with a boat to some of the islands at the coast of Boston. The weather was perfect today, sunny and about 32° Celcius. While I was on the boat I heard two nice girls talking Dutch so asked if they were from Holland too. Obviously they were too and we spend the rest of the day together at the islands. The islands weren’t that exciting, but it was just very nice to hang out there on a nice summerday like today. I was happy to meet these girls, made the day even better 🙂 Read the rest of this entry »

Bread with hagelslag as breakfast and cycling to Harvard

This morning I had breakfast with the guy I’m staying with these days and he happened to be Dutch too. He lives for a couple of years in the US and surprised me this morning with hagelslag (typical Dutch, if you don’t know: just google it) on bread for breakfast 🙂

After having breakfast together he had to go to his work and lend me a bike, which I’m really happy with. After many days of walking half marathons through New York it’s a nice change to go biking through Boston. Read the rest of this entry »

Chilling in Boston

Another thing on my list was the famous cube of glass above the Apple Store at Fifth avenue. But like I wasn’t disappointed enough by Apple this year, the cube of glass was in construction and what was left was just a boring Apple store. So after two minutes I left Fifth avenue again, bought some icecream on my way and headed back to the appartment to pack my bags. Although I didn’t see everything of New York yet (even for me that’s not possible in four days) I had the feeling that it was time to travel again. Read the rest of this entry »

Day at the museum

Today I visited a place that was high on my list of things to see. I went to the American Museum of National History.

If you’ve seen the movie ‘Night at the museum‘: except from everything coming alive, it’s absolutely just as awesome as in the movie. I think this is the largest museum I’ve been so far. There are four floors with collections of cultural items from all over the world. You can see a lot from different cultures and see many animals you probably haven’t seen in real life. There really is a lot to learn in this museum. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s nice to be called sir. NY is so friendly :)

Last year I read in a book that New Yorkers are really friendly people. After three days in the Big Apple I can only say that’s absolutely true. You only have to get your map from your pocket and someone will ask you if you need help. When I asked for help, so far everyone took the time to explain me how to get somewhere. I think it is neccessery to be at least a little friendly when you live with about eight million people in a city, but I’ve never seen people being so friendly and helpful as here in NY. Waking up in the city that never sleeps

I didn’t expect to get a jet lack, but around 04.00am I was completely awake again, although I was still tired. I laid awake in my bed for a while and then thought ‘Why not just get up, it’s the city that never sleeps anyway’. So after a fresh shower I found myself around 05.00am sitting in the subway to the Brooklyn Bridge and waited there till sunrise and took some pictures. It was really nice to see the skyline of New York in real life now. It’s still a little unreal that I’m actually in New York. Read the rest of this entry »

Flying to New York

Before you continue reading my first blogpost from the States I just want to mention that I didn’t had so many hours of sleep last night, so you could probably see that back in the quality of my writing, but that means it’s only getting better in the next couple of weeks… eeh months 😀

Today I found out that it’s a good thing that a day only has 24 hours and not 30 or more. I always wished for longer days, but now I finally had a day of more than 30 hours and I found out that it’s quite exhausting…

The departure is getting closer

In less than a month I’ll be arriving in New York. Time is moving fast these days. It’s really exciting! There are some interesting things going on these days. I learned more than ever the importance of a good network. I was still thinking about where to stay in NY and a couple of weeks ago I talked with a friend about it and he told me he had some friends living there. He contacted them for me and they contacted another friend of them who has an apartment in Manhattan (nearby Central Park). As it looks right now I can probably stay at his place for a couple of days. Isn’t that awesome? 😀 Read the rest of this entry »

Prepairing for the journey

A week ago I bought my ticket. This week I got my ESTA-approval (required for visiting the USA) and I’m still quite busy with a lot of different things to organize for my new adventure. Today I launched this new website which I will use to keep everyone up-to-date about my journey. I also created a Flickr-account that is linked to this website (as you can see in the Polaroids), a Vimeo-account for the video’s, a Twitter-account and a Facebook-page… So everything is set up to share the stories and adventures.
