Waking up in the city that never sleeps
by Edwin
I didn’t expect to get a jet lack, but around 04.00am I was completely awake again, although I was still tired. I laid awake in my bed for a while and then thought ‘Why not just get up, it’s the city that never sleeps anyway’. So after a fresh shower I found myself around 05.00am sitting in the subway to the Brooklyn Bridge and waited there till sunrise and took some pictures. It was really nice to see the skyline of New York in real life now. It’s still a little unreal that I’m actually in New York.
On one hand it’s something so big, on the other hand it’s so reachable, it’s just actually happening. I don’t know how to explain that better, it’s just really cool to see this dream come true 🙂
After my visit to the Brooklyn Bridge I had my first American breakfast: pancakes and scrambled eggs with bacon. And a coffee and some cool drinks. I start to understand why a lot of Americans have a different weight than European 😉
I promised my little sister to text her when I had seen the Statue of Liberty, so that brought to the second activity of today. I took the ferry to Statue Island. Also very amazing to see that famous building in real life. It’s quite huge actually. Talking about huge, the skyscrapers were a little disappointing so far. For some reason I expected them to be bigger. But maybe that opinion changes when I’m on top of one of them, one of these days… The skyscraper were a lot more impressive when I was stending next to them 😉
A last thing about the Statue of Liberty: it was a good idea to visit Statue Island early in the morning, because when I came back in Manhattan in the afternoon, there was a line of at least 300 meter of people waiting to get on the ferry.
The nice thing of waking up so early is that you have plenty of time to visit all the interesting places. I arrived at the Statue of Liberty around 09.00 in the morning with the feeling that it was already late in the afternoon. Since it was still so early I took the time to write my first blogpost and to upload the first pictures. I can’t imagine a better location to do that. Sitting in the shadow of a tree at the grass next to the Statue of Liberty watching the skyline of New York while writing down my adventures. I love it!
Back in Manhattan I decided to walk via broadway to Times Square. That’s quite a walk, but it’s nice to see a lot. Being a good tourist I also buyed a NY-cap and some cheap sunglasses, both indispensable these days. I’m still looking for Converse All Stars, but didn’t find special types so far. The walk to Times Square took a couple of hours and it’s really a good way to see a lot of the city. Times Square is just as you know it from tv/movies: commercial screens everywhere and totally crowded.
In the evening it started to rain, so I went back to the apartment, bought a pizza on my way home and relaxed the rest of the night at home, also an important thing with intensive days like this.
Here is a short movie I shot this morning:
