Jambalaya! And a long train ride coming
by Edwin
Today I joined Lydia to her church. For some kind of reason I expected a gospel church here in New Orleans, but it was about the same kind of church like last week. It’s sad to say that I can immagine why churches like these don’t really attract young people. I don’t want to criticize other churches to much, but I think it just doesn’t fit in this time anymore. Anyway, the service was quite short (about half an hour), because of the summer, so after that we went back home and decided to take the streetcar to downtown. The streetcar is what we in the Netherlands would call tram or trolly and they look really qute. All the windows of the streetcar were open, so it was nice cool in there, much better than on the street.
From downtown we took the ferry that crossed the Mississippi and had lunch in a small restaurant there. It’s interesting that they have huge TV screens in the most restaurants here showing the american sports, baseball and American football. The only annoying thing is that there is a commercial every five minutes, so it’s not really attractive to watch. After a good lunch we took the ferry again and went home. I prepared myself for the trip of the coming days by downloading some movies and ebooks.
In the evening I wanted to go back downtown to take some nice pictures of the Mississippi after sunset. Before sunset we had diner at the shore and I ate Jambalaya for the first time. I already heard something about that food. It’s typical from this place, I liked it. Lydia interestingly mentioned that the food is exactly like this city: “a lot of different ingredients mixed together”. I couldn’t have said that better, it’s absolutely true. One thing I’ve noticed in the two days that I’m here is that there are so many different people here, from all over the world. After diner the sun was down and the light was perfect to take some nice pictures at the river side.
Back home I was a little tired, but decided to quickly write down this last post for the next couple of days. Tomorrow morning I take the train to Los Angeles. It’s a train ride of 46 hours, so I’ll arrive there at wednesday. I expect to see more then during the trainride of yesterday. We’ll cross Texas, New Mexico and Arizona what is a really different landscape than what I’ve seen so far. The weather forecast for Los Angeles is promising, about 10 to 15 degrees cooler. Perfect summer weather. My first challenge there will be to find a hostel, because couchsurfing didn’t work out. Fortunately I arrive early in the morning, so that will probably work out good. By the way, it’s also two hours earlier there, so that makes the time difference with Europa nine hours.
So next post will be later this week from the west coast! 😎
