80 Days in America

I started the day by driving around in the village just out of the park, in search of wifi to update the blog and check my e-mail. I ended up in a cosy bookstore-cafe, something I really wish we had back home too. I spend my morning there with a nice big cappuccino and my laptop. Just before noon I started driving again back to Yellowstone. A perfect timing, because the sun was about to break through the grey sky.

I think I wrote about this the first day of my roadtrip, but I just have to say it again: many Americans really can’t drive their car. It is just so annoying and the stupid thing is that you have to drive bad yourself too to communicate with them, tailgating (nl: bumperkleven) is a way of communication in traffic here. A couple of years ago when I was getting my driving license, I was really not happy that the Netherlands have the hardest driving exam in the world (I heard that’s serious true), but these days I’m really happy with it. Makes the amount of bad drivers a lot smaller than here in the USA. I’ll just stop here talking about traffic, but I think my frustration of this afternoon is clear. 😉

Having that said, it was really beautiful again in Yellowstone. It’s absolutely worth to visit the park at least two days. I think you can spend more than a week in that National Park without getting bored. I forgot to write about it yesterday, but next to the most famous geyser of Yellowstone, called ‘Old Faithful’, there is a huge lodge build of wood. It was build in 1904 by a 29 years old architect called Robert Reamer. Yesterday there was a guy playing at a grand piano, but he wasn’t here today (see a trend? ;)). Still it was really nice to spend some time there again. I sat for a while at the fireplace reading a book and enjoying the warmth of the fire. You might not expect it, but it’s quite cold these days in the area of Yellowstone.

Later that afternoon I exited Yellowstone via the south entrance which leads to another national park: The Grant Tetons. This also is a beautiful park with wildlife and as the name already shows: it has some huge mountains. It looks a bit like the alps in Europe. Absolutely beautiful. Again the people I talk with tell me that I’m here just in the perfect time of the year, because everything starts to become very beautiful these days. The sky is brighter, the trees start to change colors, etc.

I kept on driving till after sunset, watching a really beautiful sky. I don’t think I’ve seen such a beautiful sky many times before. I was happy to be almost alone on the road in the evening, so I could drive a lot faster and make more miles in the direction of Colorado.
